Composer-in-Residence

Each year The Australian Voices works with an emerging composer to encourage the development of young composers and their music. The Composer-in-Residence is encouraged to experiment with new ideas and try them out in a creative, dynamic atmosphere.

The Australian Voices Composer-in-Residence for 2010 is Sydney University Student Chris Williams. Chris recently graduated from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, completing his Bachelor of Music with first class honours in composition. Outside the Conservatorium Chris has gained a great deal from working with his friend and mentor the revered Australian composer Nigel Butterley and in 2008 Chris was invited by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music, to be his student for the advanced composition course at the prestigious Dartington International Summer School in England.

Past Composers-in-Residence include:

  • Jaret Choolun
  • Nick Buc
  • Lee Crockford
  • Joseph Twist
  • If you are a young composer and would like to apply for this position in 2011, please send an email to info@theaustralianvoices.com

    What they say

"Each work had clearly been thoroughly and meticulously prepared; the clear diction and accurate, secure intonation were among fundamental technical aspects of very musical and expressive singing"
